Virgin Diaries :: Sky-High Skincare

In class at Virgin Atlantic's London-Based Grooming School. I'm in the center.[trip style = any]

Virgin Atlantic's got the market cornered on runway-ready beauty {pun intended}. Intent to find out how flight attendants look hot on high, I flew to London a few months ago to attend their grooming school, a three-pronged skin, makeup and hair course EVERY uniformed staff---guys and gals---goes through when they sign up, up and away with Branson's birds.

Curious how Virgin's flight attendants, dubbed "red hotties" by travelers, look impossibly airbrushed {read: runway hair, luscious red lips, rosy cheeks and bright eyes} at hour 10 of an international flight, I was schooled in Virgin's sky-high skincare, modern make-up tips and airtight hairstyles as if I was signing on as staff. Jumping into character from top to toe, I even slipped on the signature red uniform and red shoes, complete with a set of wings pinned to my lapel.

Confession: as a devotee of beauty magazines since I applied tinted lip gloss as a pre-tween, part of me wondered what I could really learn at London sky school. A lot! Sky-high beauty is VERY different from day-to-day beauty.

Gleaning enough grooming tips to fill a 747, I'm commandeering Trip Styler's content on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of this week with red carpet-ready---er, make that red concourse-ready---tips for glam globetrotting. Today will focus on sky-high skin. We'll devote Wednesday to jet lag-masking makeup tips. Friday will take us into the hair chair for updo {pun intended} 101.

Interviewing Virgin Atlantic Crew about inflight beauty

Sky-High Skin "If you spend money on one (travel) skin saver, buy a good moisturizer" said Mim Allgood, Virgin's ultra-groomed Grooming Standards Manager. Looking at the dewy-faced crew, I'd tend to agree. Somehow, they come out of a long haul flight with picture-perfect skin while everyone else is as parched as the Arizona desert. This isn't just good genes. Recruits are taught to prep for travel daily with a solid skincare regime {and find a good facialist to visit once every six weeks!}. Here's the photo-ready formula:

Pre-Flight 1/ Exfoliate the night before, apply a hydrating masque and slather MORE moisturizer than your usual amount to give skin a boost of extra hydration. 2/ Before you leave for the airport, cleanse and moisturize, massaging the moisturizer onto the complexion with your knuckles for up to two minutes to achieve a plump facade. 3/ Avoid any diuretic---tea, coffee, pop---and hydrate with nature's nectar: H2O. 4/ Trip Styler Tip :: in an exclusive travel beauty interview with Dr. Murad, he said we should also "eat our water."

Inflight 1/ Keep your moisturizer close by to refresh your skin throughout the flight. Virgin flight attendants favor Dermalogica and Kiehl's. 2/ Drink a lot of water. For example, the flight attendants I interviewed each consume a litre and a half of water on an eight-hour trip. 3/ On the topic of inflight bevvies: consuming is not recommended because it saps skin of moisture. However, when the Virgin flight crew I spoke to are traveling personally, they indulge in a flute or two of bubbly. 4/ Spritz md formulations Moisture Defence Antioxidant Spray on the face throughout the flight for mini moisture surges.

Post-Flight 1/ Cleanse skin and place a few drops of lavender essential oil into a basin of hot water. Stand over top, soak a face cloth and compress your face two to three times. Not only does this refresh tired skin, but if you do it before bed, lavender is known to assist in calming the body.

The night before my flight home to Vancouver, I stood in front of the mirror in my London hotel room eager to put my training to the test. At hour six of the eight-hour flight, I noticed my skin appeared visibly plumper. In this moment my hypothesis was confirmed: travel beauty is oceans away from everyday beauty.

Virgin Atlantic Travel Beauty Tips 1

Trip Styler Tip :: As we mentioned late in 2011, Virgin’s birds are flying West {again} this summer. Starting May 14th, a seasonal non-stop service takes flight from Vancouver to London {return}. Yay!

Travel Beauty :: Target Canada Eh!

target comes to canada + travel beauty[trip style = any]

Want more travel beauty? Lauren, our travel beauty expert, is already whipping up her next concoction post!

Well, tickle me pink---make that red!---because Target is finally launching in Canada (and not just in one market, but ALL over the country). Those who already shop at Target stores in the US for clothing and beauty collabs know how fabulous their beauty department is---I could spend hours there. This month I snagged an interview with Joanne Elson from Target Canada about the beauty department in their upcoming Canadian stores.

Which beauty brands will be available at Target Canada? Known for its unique partnerships, Target has worked with more than 100 brands over the years. Each brand partner is known and loved for their expertise, whether in fashion, design, beauty or sport and we are proud to bring such brands to our Canadian shoppers. We will carry a wide variety of both national beauty brands and collections that are exclusive to Target. Two of Target’s popular beauty partnerships include:

Sonia Kashuk Collection Makeup artist Sonia Kashuk is a true talent and innovator in the cosmetics world. She began her career in the 80s working with esteemed photographer Arthur Elgort, collaborating on editorial assignments for Vogue, while also working the shows of high-profile designers. She is recognized as a leader in the beauty industry and in 1999, Sonia Kashuk and Target created an exclusive collection of cosmetics, skin care, tools and bags ranging in price from $1.99 - $39.99.

Pixi Designed by makeup artist Petra Strand 10 years ago, Pixi is about multitasking, flaw-fixing and youth-enhancing products for women on-the-go. The line includes a variety of classics to new multipurpose products infused with botanicals to treat the skin while it’s worn. Pixi is available exclusively at Target with prices ranging from $8.00 - $40.00.

Will Canada be getting any special brands that won't be in the US stores? Our goal is to deliver the true Target brand experience to our Canadian guests, while keeping in mind their unique wants and needs. We are excited to launch a number of brands that are unique to the Canadian market, including products from Annabelle and Marcelle. Canadian brand Cake Beauty has also designed a bath and body line exclusively for Target called 'Be Delectable.’ As seen in the US, we have developed partnerships and relationships with everyone from beauty partners to fashion designers and musicians. We look forward to maintaining and fostering new relationships in Canada.

Spring Beauty Trend: Bright Juicy Lips! We handpicked a few of our Target travel beauty faves and featured them in the photo above. Use them this spring by adding a splash of color to your jetsetting look with bold red and sunny tangerine lip colors. Make sure to tone down your eyes and cheeks as these lips stand out on their own. Also hot for spring are gorgeous pink grapefruit shades for lips. Pair this color with aqua eyeliner, for a fun, on-trend look.

I just got back from LA---my former stomping grounds---with an EXTRA suitcase filled to the brim with clothes, food, and guess what took up a biggest amount of suitcase space? Products from The Organic Pharmacy. Founded by a pharmacist and her husband, I absolutely love this UK-based health and beauty store. With natural, non-toxic products and uber-knowledgeable staff to recommend beauty solutions for your every whim, this store is your one-stop beauty shop. Below are a few of the items I picked up on this trip!

1/ Carrot Butter Cleanser $69 Yes, the price is a little steep for a cleanser, but this has to be the thickest, richest cleanser I've ever used. In these cold winter months, nothing makes my skin feel so clean yet so soft. I love the balm-like consistency.

2/ Immune Tonic $26 This tincture was created to help boost the immune system and fight infection, all you do is add 10 drops into a glass of water. Perfect for before or after a flight, or during cold and flu season; Immune Tonic is a no-brainer I always keep in my purse. This tonic is made with potent ingredients like Astragalus, Cat's Claw, Elderberry, Thyme, and Plantain, all known to boost the immune system.

3/ Cleopatra's Milk Bath $64 The name alone got me! This relaxing bath soak has luxurious rose petals and decadent, hydrating milk as main ingredients, taking your regular bath to a whole other level.

Bonus - Apricot & Chamomile Lotion for Baby $27 I recently had my second baby and this light lotion leaves my little ones smelling d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. I love that it's made without any harsh chemicals and filled with ingredients like Apricot Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Chamomile and Aloe.

PS - Want these lotions and potions now? You can order them online.

Travel Beauty :: Splurge VS Steal {Part 2}

{Editor's Note: Trip Styler experienced a site outage on Monday. As a result an unfinished post was sent out via email. If you happened to read the incomplete story about Puerto Vallara, lo siento (sorry in Spanish). You can see the full, complete story here.}

Want more travel beauty? Get your fill the third Wednesday of every month. Lauren, our travel beauty expert, is already whipping up her next concoction post!

For November's Travel Beauty primer, Lauren continues her Splurge VS Steal series and picks four additional travel must-haves worth e-v-e-r-y penny---whether drug store flings or premium-priced miracles.

1/ Hair Tamer Splurge: Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Pure Treatment Oil, $24 Keep frizz away all day long and under the most humid weather conditions with this treatment that uses Kendi Oil from Indonesia to get even the thickest, coarsest hair ultra smooth in an instant. It works well for finer hair types too {just use a small amount} and can be applied to damp or dry hair. Genius!

2/ Mascara Steal: Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume Blasting Mascara, $6.99 Proof that price doesn't always reflect product performance, this mascara creates the fullest, most dramatic lashes. I'm asked if my lashes are fake almost every time I use it.

3/ Skincare Primer Splurge: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15, $52 Not everyone wears a primer before applying makeup, but now that I've discovered this primer, I think everyone should. Its natural, mineral-based formula is water-resistant and has SPF 15 that creates a light layer to absorb oil and shine, minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines, soften the skin and create a smooth canvas for makeup. Perfect for travel when you aren't as likely to freshen up your makeup throughout the day, this product leaves skin looking totally flawless from morning until night.

4/ Dry Shampoo Steal: Suave Dry Shampoo Spray, $2.54 {Trip Styler Editor's fave} When you're on the road and don't have time to wash your 'do, or want to volumize apres plane hair, spritz a touch of this light, lemon-scented dry shampoo into your tresses for an instant lift and just-washed effect. I use this regularly at home, as well as bring this 5oz bottle with me on every road trip. When I travel by air with my carry-on, its size is over 3oz, so I always carry cornstarch-based baby powder in its place.
