Roll-On Essential Oils for Travel

[trip style = any]

In my restorative yoga class last week, the instructor came around and offered each class member a pump of lavender lotion for our hands, which we raised up to our noses in prayer position and breathed in the floral aroma to prepare ourselves for class. While this practice scored a little too patchouli for comfort on my new-age-o-meterwell, that and the eight minutes of shanti chantsthe lavender had a calming effect over me and helped me leave behind outside distractions and focus on my breathing.

Aromas trigger emotional and physiological responses in our bodies and our brains, making them therapeutic problems solvers instead of simply pleasant scents. Essential oils are concentrated liquids distilled from plants, and while they may be trendy, they're also lifesavers for travelers. To ease stress, try lavender or frankincense. For energy and balance, try grapefruit and lemon. For jet lag and motion sickness, try peppermint and ginger. If these don't work, you could always work on your eight-minute shanti chants, but I think I'll explore aromatherapy instead.

I've assembled a small list of easy-to-pack rollerball oils for travel. To use, roll a little on your temples, wrists, neck and pressure points behind your ears. When flying or traveling in close quarters, be mindful of others and their scent sensitivity.

Aesop Ginger Flight Therapy
- Ginger Root, Lavender, Geranium
- For stress, nausea or weariness

Aveda Stress-Fix Concentrate
- Lavender, Lavandin, Clary Sage
- For stress

H. Gillerman Organics Travel Remedy
- Lemon Balm, Lavender, Orange, Palmarosa, Cedar
- For jet lag or discomfort with sitting

Silk Road Happy Wellness Remedy
- Lemon Balm, Grapefruit, Lavender, Tropical Verbena
- For energy and mood enhancement
- Love this one! I purchased it on a recent trip to this shop and spa in Victoria, BC.

Trip Styler Tip: These oils are safe to use topically, but if you have individual pure essential oils, combine them with a carrier oil like jojoba or almond to avoid skin burns. Or, as an alternative, place a drop of oil on a cotton cloth, raise it to your face and breathe in deeply.

Travel Beauty :: Holiday Palettes

The Christmas season is the most wonderful time of the year to buy beauty products. It’s when major brands release limited-edition palettes filled with possibilities. These holiday sets are not only great gifts, but also perfect travel companions. Whether your cosmetics fit into one small case or occupy a full closet, these palettes are an intelligent investment for an easy-to-pack, five-minute face.

Trip Styler Tips
- Look for palettes with high-quality brushes to get the most bang for your buck.
- If you don’t wear make-up, look for travel-size skincare and haircare kits.
- If a palette is filled with dark or bright shades you'll never wear, don't be seduced by a deal!

What to buy
Clockwise from top left: Urban Decay naked on the run – eyeshadow, mascara, eye pencil, bronzer, blush, lip gloss; Tarte bon voyage collector’s set & travel bag – eyeshadow, mascara, cheek stain, lip gloss, lip tint, finishing powder, face oil; Laura Mercier portable color palette – eyeshadow, eye liner, blush, lip gloss; Nars laser cut eye, cheek & lip palette – eyeshadow, bronzer, blush, lip gloss; Too Faced la belle carousel – eye shadow, mascara, bronzer, blush; Bobbi Brown deluxe eye & lip palette – eyeshadow, lip colour, brushes

Travel Beauty :: Interview with Eco Diva Beauty

[trip style = any]

Meet Charlene Swanson and Garcy Fry, the natural duo behind luxury online eco-boutique Eco Diva Beauty. Spreading the word about pure, effective, sustainable beauty products is this mother-daughter pair's mission, but that's not all. Eco Diva Beauty is trying to do something bigger: Inspire others to make positive changes in their life, starting with what they put on their skinthe largest organ in the human body! Curious what these conscious jetsetters slather on their bodies when they go afar? I chatted with Charlene and Garcy about their travel beauty secrets and dream destinations.

What are your top destinations?
Garcy Fry: Mexico is my travel muse. It’s where I go to relax, bask in the heat and let the kids play on the beach. The people are so kind and gracious. And the foodI could live off fresh guacamole, salsa and fish tacos. Oh, and I love a margarita {or dos} on the rocks! Another locale I love is a little closer to home. Once our car broke down and we got stuck for a few days in Keromeos, a tiny town with a gazillion orchards and fruit stands in the interior of British Columbia. Ironically, it's become one of my family's magic weekend destinations for its quaint little diners, neat antique shops, picturesque parks, relaxing tube rides down the river and fresh fruit for days!

Charlene Swanson: My all-time favorite destination is Italy. A recent quote I saw on Instagram by Giuseppe Verdi sums it up for me: "You may have the universe if I may have Italy.” To me, everything beautiful has originated from Italia {and it aligns perfectly with my innate love of luxury cars, fashion, jewelry, art, food, wine, the opera...}. My second go-to destination is what I call the sweet spot in the universe, California. North or south, it doesn’t matter; there are so many swoon-worthy locations in this state I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. I don’t know if it’s the sunshine and the ocean, but innovation and dreams manifest there.

What is your travel beauty ritual?
GF: True travel beauty is about hydration—drinking copious amounts of water, keeping your face dewy inflight and wearing an ultra-hydrating serum like May Lindstrom The Youth Dew or La Bella Figura Rainforest Hydration Treatment.

CS: On my recent excursion to California I brought One Love Organics Vitamin D Moisture Mist for on-the-go moisturizing, as well as the Tata Harper Travel Kit and La Bella Travel Serum Mood Booster {which I also use as a perfume}. And I don’t go anywhere without my W3LL PEOPLE Bio Extreme Mascara.

What are your three travel must-haves?
GF: A great pair of casual-comfy sneakers or flats. These days I’m loving Sam Edelman’s Black Becker Synthetic Croc Sneakers, a couple of scarves and at least 10 different lipsticks {for my 10 different moods}.

CS: James Perse tees, Rag & Bone jeans and Manolo Blahnik leopard-print driving shoes {they dress up anything}!

What is your dream trip?
GF: My dream trip would be taking my family on a round-the-world tour to Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Ireland and Scotland. My in-laws did it for 10 months with my husband and his siblings when he was seven years old and they still talk about their epic journey. We're hoping to do the same for our kids when we are done having them!

CS: I'm planning on taking my dream trip soon! I would visit Spain, Portugal, France and spend a sabbatical exploring Italy to the fullest.

What are your favorite double-duty beauty products?
GF: I love Kahina’s Night Cream. I have it on my nightstand to put on my face before bed and I also use it as a hand cream. Like all of Kahina’s products, the scent is so light and divine and the texture is a whipped soufflé that leaves your skin feeling hydrated without any greasiness! I also love using W3LL People UNIVERSALIST Multi-use Colorstick and Vapour Aura Multi-Use Blush as lipstick as well as blush.

CS: I'm really sensitive to smells and don’t like anything overwhelming. I fell in love with May Lindstrom’s Jasmine Garden mist and went through a jar pretty quickly because I also used it to refresh my hair every day and night. I use Prtty Peaushun’s Skin Tight Body Lotion as a hand cream because it’s an amazing moisturizer and smells so darn good. I keep the travel size in my purse.

Travel Beauty :: Jetlag Busters

TravelBeautyMustHaves

[trip style = any]

Traveling for a living, I keep my five-minute make-up routine basic yet high impact. The same small cosmetic case that comes with me to Hong Kong or Mexico also acts as my everyday beauty bag at home. I never unpack it.

Sure, the colors in my kit may shift from season to season, but my bases and philosophy remain the same: Find and apply the BEST fatigue-busting camouflage and accent from there.

Since I started Trip Styler almost five years ago, I've refined {and refined again} my travel and everyday beauty routine into something quick and effective. Here are the products I use daily and pack as if they were attached to my passport.

Base
Since very few bases are perfect skin tone matches, I use two colors of MAC's Pro Longwear Concealersuggested to me by the make-up artist at the TV station where I've talked traveland mix them in a small, sealable pot to match my complexion {which tends to slightly lighten or darken depending on the climate I'm in}.

Bronzer
The one bronzer I keep coming back to after having dipped my brush into a bevy of top-rated faux tan powders is Benefit Cosmetics' Hoola because it leaves a St. Tropez glow and is free of glimmer {a travel no-no as sparkles can settle into tired eyes and fine lines}. Bonus: use it as a below-the-cheek-bone contouring cheat to instantly drop 10 pounds.  {See the one-minute how-to video}

Brows
With fair skin and non-Brazilian-supermodel featureslisten, we can't all be Giseleone of the easiest tricks I've learned for an eye-popping look is intensifying the brows. My make-up artist friend selected the perfect color for my skin tonea mid-brown eye shadowwhich I swipe over my brows with an angled brush and set/sculpt with clear mascara for all-day staying power.

Eyes
Since I'm all about speed and anything that will brighten my eyes and stay put whether I'm traipsing around an urban or actual jungle, I've become a mega-fan of MAC's Paint Pot in Bare Study. For best results, I dip my ring finger into the petit pot and apply the creamy eye shadow to my lid and just below my brow {the cream turns to powder when it's applied}. I've never found a long-lasting shadow as impressive as this. Don't forget to dab a little over the inside corner and along the inner rims of your eyes to "fake" being awake. When you're tired from travel {or life!} this waterproof potion hides any hint of red making it "look" like you've just slept for eight hours.

Lips
There are two lip products I won't travel without: Stain and gloss. Lip stain is great because it's long-lasting and keeps my kisser rouge from Vancouver to Sydney. Right now I like Revlon's Just Bitten Balm Stain. For gloss, I can't get enough of Maybelline's Baby Lips, a lightly tinted balm-gloss, which I have in almost every shade.

Here Comes The Sun

Editor's Note: Thank you to those of you who entered our Storybook giveaway. Brandon B. won! Canadian readers: We look forward to doing a cool giveaway for you soon!

Nothing ruins a sunny escape like a sunburn. You didn't fly all the way to the beaches of Tulum or the coast of Croatia to sit in your air-conditioned room with a bottle of aloe gel, a cold compress and a sour disposition. Don't let a burn rain on your sunshiny parade.

With this is mind, we've selected our favorite sunscreens for your face and body, whether you're looking for something to fit into your daily skin care regimen or something to stash in your luggage as you dash off to the desert. Seriouslythese are awesome.

Face sunscreens (top row)
Serum: Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Fluid: Neutrogena Pure & Free Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Lightweight cream: EltaMD UV Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 45
Tinted cream: Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Stick: Sun Bum SPF 30 Face Stick

Body sunscreens (bottom row)
Spray: Sun Bum SPF 50 Continuous Spray Sunscreen
Sensitive skin lotion: La Roche-Posay Lightweight Lotion SPF 60
Mineral & organic lotion: Coola Sport SPF 35 Citrus Mimosa

Trip Styler Tips:

  • Always apply sunscreen as the final step of your morning routine.
  • For everyday wearregardless of your skin tone or genderchoose a daily moisturizer that contains at LEAST SPF 15. {Here at the TS HQ, we do a min of 30.}
  • Don't rely on the SPF in make up, like BB creams, to get you through a day outside; instead think of it as an added bonus.
  • Look for key words like broad spectrum, PA+++, UVA and UVB protection, as well as active ingredients like titanium dioxide, zinc dioxide, avobenzone and mexoryl.
  • Spending the day outdoors? Apply a thick coat of sunscreen, reapply every one to two hours and stay in the shade when possible. Use a shot-glass-sized amount on your body and a teaspoon on your face.
  • Road tripping? Don't forget to apply sunscreen when you're in the car—especially on the side of your body that faces the sun.
  • Consider your geographical location when you factor your level of skin protection. Even seasoned travelers sometimes forget this rule. When Trip Styler's Editor in Chief was visiting the Banyan Tree Mayakoba last month, she thought she'd protected herself with an application of high SPF in the morning and a beach-side perch under a palapa, but the strong Mexican sun gave her a much more than rosy glow.

  • Finally, *if* you do peel from an unfortunate sun sizzle-session, skip the loofa and rub baking soda on your skin to exfoliate!
