Arizona Spring Training

[trip style = sightseeing]

{Editor’s Note :: This month we’re featuring one of our favourite trip style = sun destinations: Phoenix/Scottsdale. So far, we've been singing the praises of a GG in AZ & Roam+Board :: Arizona Biltmore. More from our AZ choir sheet to come.}

Every March Arizona gets a littler hotter than its norm {read: 23 degrees Celsius average} with the body heat of t-h-o-u-s-a-n-d-s of fans who storm the desert for Spring Training Baseball. And it's not just out-of-towner's, the locals get fever pitch too. With 15 Major League baseball teams batting up, it's like an outdoor beer garden with pretzels, and peanuts---now if only they made radlers... I had the opportunity to sit in the eighth row behind third base and watch the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the Colorado Rockies in their sold-out season opener last weekend. I've been humming "take me out to the ball game" ever since....

{Trip Styler Tip :: Spring training baseball is a guaranteed good time, and tickets are cheap. Perfect for mancations, girls' getaways and family vacays. And if spectating on a grassy knoll picnic-style appeals to you as much as it does to me, some parks have this type of seating. BYOB: bring your own blanket.}

Think Outside The Airport

[trip style = budget conscious]

One common money-saving tactic used by trip style = budget conscious travelers is to think outside the airport by comparing and contrasting the same flight route at close-by departure points. Sometimes this five minute search can result in $400+ savings per airline ticket.

Whenever I travel a new route, my first order of biz is research which nearby airports would expand my departure and arrival options, especially to the following destinations with overlapping flights: Florida, Vegas, LA, Palm Springs, the Hawaiian islands, Phoenix, etc... Thirty percent of the time it makes sense to use an airport other than YVR {my home airport}.

In January I took a trip style = {extended} weekend trip to Honolulu. To find the best price, flight schedule and carrier to accrue air miles, I checked direct flights from three airports: Vancouver, Bellingham and Seattle. Here's an example of the return fares I found: Vancouver, BC: $750 /// Bellingham, WA: $370 /// Seattle, WA: $450.

I chose the Bellingham flight for the following reasons: a} price, b} it's only an hour away, c} I can cross the border quickly with Nexus, d} parking is easy at BLI, d} I collect air miles with my flight's carrier: Alaska Airlines, and e} it had the best flight times for an efficient trip style {extended} weekend trip: depart Thurs 6pm, return Tues at 7.10am.

How To :: The Three-Min Think Outside The Airport Search 1/ Determine which airports surround you. 2/ Do a google search for similar flight routes at each airport {Google "direct flights from <insert airport here>" to find results quickly, see example in Google Traveler Tricks} 3/ Go to kayak.com and manually enter the departure and arrival airport options. See example below between Vancouver and LA. 4/ Survey the results, does it make sense to travel from an alternate airport?

Roam+Board :: Arizona Biltmore

[trip style = luxury + sun]

{Editor’s Note :: This month we're featuring one of our favourite trip style = sun destinations: Phoenix/Scottsdale. I'm here right now, and today I have the pleasure of flaunting this desert jewel. Look out for more of AZ in IMG_FRI and destination Spotlights.}

What It's easy to get lost in the winding corridors of a large hotel, but getting lost on the Arizona Biltmore's 39-acre, eight-pool property is bliss. Ultra-landscaped gardens---think Paris' Jardin des Tuileries---greet you between sets of Frank Lloyd Wright-infused low-rise buildings.

Just as chic and approachably glam as it was when Hollywood's Golden Era celebs frolicked in this 1929-built desert oasis, the Biltmore is a big hotel with a boutique feel and a Pleasantville-like perfection in its friendly demeanour and manicured grounds.

If I could have stayed longer, I would have watched the sunrise in an Adirondack chair with a morning coffee and book, picked up a just-fallen orange from one of the property's many citrus trees, played a round of lawn party-sized checkers or croquet, or sipped a tequila sunrise {invented at the Biltmore} next to one of the fire pits.

Where Phoenix, AZ, about 15 minutes from the airport.

When High season is between November and April due to sunny, 20-30 degree Celcius weather. From June to September expect the type of heat that makes you want to carry a portable mister. Visit in October and May for hot 'n breezy temperatures and killer low-season deals.

Who/Why You like space, friendly staff whizzing by on delivery tricycles and dry desert heat, and your appreciation for Art Deco goes further West than the design style's Parisian roots. Foodie alert: eat at Wright's, the resort's signature restaurants which delivers on service, style and sustenance.

Cost From $269. A $28 nightly resort charge affords complimentary wifi, use of fitness centre and self parking.

The Savvy Traveler :: Jason

[trip style = beach + sightseeing + weekend getaway]

Jason's got it down. Each year he travels to a trio of far-flung locales on a big trip and a bevy of beach destinations on smaller trips. Along with weekends away, this has him escaping Vancouver at least once a month, all while holding a major role at one of Canada's most respected and longstanding retailers. The only way to couple his long work hours with his love of travel is to plan ahead and then go for it---even when it seems inconvenient. Extended weekend in Chicago, why not? Three-week, multi-country itinerary? No problem. Spot this stylish jetsetter---with a penchant for layering grey tones---traveling alongside his globetrotting partner, Hjalmar.

1/ What are your top 3 trip styles & why?
We typically break down our yearly vacations into major trips, minor tips and weekend getaways:

[trip style = weekend getaway] Managing the hectic work schedules of two people who live to travel is tough. Weekend getaways are a must! Our two-day escapes range from trip style = wine tasting in Kelowna to trip style = skiing in Whistler. Extended weekends involve trip style = beach'ing it in Hawaii or checking out the trip style = urban restaurant scene in Chicago.

[trip style = sightseeing] Every year we plan a longer vacation {anywhere from 2-3 weeks} focusing on destinations we haven’t yet explored. We love to experience new cultures, architecture, cuisine, etc. During this type of holiday, we typically pack in as much as possible, jetting to 3-4 different cities/countries. A few years ago we did London, Egypt and Dubai and last year we did Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

[trip style = beach] Since our major trips aren’t always the most relaxing and weekend getaways are too short to unwind, we definitely look forward to a week to 10 days on the beach, and nothing more. It’s usually a week in Mexico. It's the kind of trip where I don't feel guilty for doing absolutely nothing!

2/ What items are always on your packing list?
- Kiehl's Facial Fuel {moisturizer and SPF in one}
- Anything in grey {this color goes with everything and it's seasonally neutral}
- Flip flops
- Summer scarf
- Christian Dior duffle bag {the perfect carry-all...and it's grey of course}
- iPhone {I don't leave home without it -- staying connected is a necessity for me}

3/ Carry-on or checked bag?
If it’s a week or less, carry-on! I avoid checking luggage whenever possible. It slows everything down from the check-in to the baggage claim! When I'm only doing carry-on, I can get through check-in, security and customs in less than 10 minutes, and for weekend getaways, this is a must! However, for those longer trips where I do check a bag, I still tend to pack light. It’s less about what I’m bringing, and more about what I’m bringing back!

4/ Last trip, next trip & what destination{s} are on your radar?
Last Trip: Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong

Next Trip: Yearly pilgrimage to Coachella in Palm Desert

On My Radar: Later this year we’re headed to London, Holland and Turkey. We’ve also planned a weekend trip to NYC. Our next two major trips in the coming years include Australia and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

5/ Do you have any travel rituals you follow each time you jetset?
Naps! We tend to always take a nap or rest between 4-6pm. This way we recover from a long day of sightseeing and are ready for a night on the town. Splurge! We seek out and splurge on the best restaurant in town, usually relying on the recommendations of locals or friends. Research! We always figure out the must-sees and the must-dos everywhere we go. The internet is good, but pair it with the advice of people you trust!

6/ What's the one destination you could return to year after year?
Puerto Vallarta. For the past couple years we've spent our New Year's Eve holiday in PV. There’s a large group of our friends who go every year. It’s a great way to relax after a long year and a crazy holiday season, and re-group for the coming year. It’s a quick, fairly cheap way to holiday in sun and sand.

GG in AZ

[trip style = weekend getaway + sun]

{Editor's Note :: Over the next month we're going to feature one of our favourite trip style = sun destinations: Phoenix/Scottsdale. Select hotels will be featured in Roam+Board, special mentions in IMG_FRI and features in destination Spotlights. Enjoy!}

Girls' getaways rock; the name, not so much. If men have the mighty mancation, can ladies have shecations? I'd use shetreat, but that's just wrong. Whatever we want to call them, they don't happen often enough, which is easy to say when you're in the moment. Suddenly you realize that a change of scene + a change of environment + good friends = something you should do more often. It's no wonder future vacations are planned while on vacation!

On Friday some TS contributors and I pulled a damsel departure and flew South for a trip style = {extended} weekend getaway. Right now I'm in Scottsdale drinking wine on my balcony after a day scaling 1.5-billion-year-old boulders up Camelback Mountain, followed by bathing suit bliss in the 25 degree+ Celcius sun---not a cloud in sight.

GG in AZ Itinerary

Grab the gals, plan and do a gals' getaway. Finding the time is the biggest hurdle {aside from finances, but there's always trip style = camping}. If you go to AZ, direct flights into Phoenix from Vancouver cost approximately $400 return, year round with US Airways and WestJet.
