Travel Beauty Month :: Dr. Murad Interview

dr murad + travel skincare tips[trip style = any]

{Editor’s Note: In addition to our regularly scheduled content, this month we’re doing a once-weekly feature on Travel Beauty. This weekLauren, our beauty expert, sits down with LA-based skin care guru, aka The Father of Internal Skin Care, to talk about how to get glowing skin while you jetset---regardless of your trip style! Find out how to win a special Dr. Murad skin care kit here!}

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with the renowned Howard Murad M.D., founder of Murad Skincare and the Murad Inclusive Health Spa, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine {Dermatology} at UCLA, bestselling author and brand ambassador, and busy dermatologist---who has managed to treat over 50,000 patients over the course of his career! I asked Dr. Murad to share his tips on travel skin care and how to keep your complexion healthy and glowing while on vacation. Here’s what I learned:

Airplanes Can Be More Damaging To The Skin Than The Sun dr murad water secret book + travel skin carePlanes are one of the most dehydrating places on earth. With high levels of radiation at such altitudes; free radical and environmental damage are real concerns. What to do? “The skin is connected to the body, so if skin is dehydrated, so is the body,” explains Dr. Murad. “Internal hydration helps external hydration. Hydrating isn’t just about drinking your water, so much as eating it.” When you eat your water through fruits and vegetables, you not only hydrate, you also provide your body with antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and roughage. Whereas drinking too much water can flush out key nutrients. Eating water-rich raw foods like grapes, pomegranates, tomatoes and cucumbers helps hydrate and plump cells, giving you firmer, healthier looking, hydrated skin. This is an example of Dr. Murad’s philosophy of internal skin care and nurturing your skin from the inside out. So try to bring these fruits and veggies on the plane {if you're traveling domestically} to stay hydrated in-flight and keep your skin glowing! And while you’re at it, check out Dr. Murad’s book The Water Secret, the perfect beach read. On the surface, you can also hydrate the skin by using moisturizers with botanical extracts. We recommend Murad’s Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture, {Sephora.com, $65} an ultra-rich cream that locks in moisture for 8 hours and Active Radiance Serum Featuring Resilient-C Complex {Sephora.com, $89} which helps skin resist environmental damage.

You Really Are What You Eat tomatoesVitamin A is known to improve the look of your skin, and is commonly prescribed to treat acne and smooth fine lines. Dr. Murad recommends eating Vitamin A and antioxidant-rich foods to help your skin from the inside out. Tomatoes, apricots, carrots, pomegranates, melon, papayas {yellow and red fruits and veggies} and green tea are examples of foods that are not only hydrating, but high in Vitamin A and antioxidants---i.e. super foods for the body and skin. In addition, these foods can help reduce certain radiation from the sun---just another reason to fill up on them. Dr. Murad cautions to stay away from fried and fatty foods, noting “improper eating is not good for the body, and the skin is part of the body.” So to stay radiant while on vacation, fill up on Vitamin-A rich foods and eat healthy.

Keep Up Your Skin Care Routine sun undoneEven on vacation, Dr. Murad recommends at the very least a 3-step skin care routine. Start with a cleanser for your skin type, follow with a treatment {depending on your skin, could be something for acne, wrinkles or pigmentation} and finish with a moisturizing sunscreen. Murad makes some fabulous travel-friendly kits that contain everything you need while on vacation, my favorites are: Age Reform Complete Skin Renewal Kit {Murad.com, $42.50} with: cleanser, treatment, day and night cream Radiant Skin Renewal Kit {Sephora.com, $45} with: cleanser, serum, moisturizer and treatment all packed with protecting and strengthening Vitamin C.

The Sun pomegranate moisturizerBeing outside and enjoying yourself is part of being on vacation---it’s unrealistic to think that you can stay out of the sun entirely. Dr. Murad suggests mixing a good sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection {to combat the burning and aging rays, also called “broad spectrum” protection}, as well as “internal sunscreen” {a healthy diet of fruits and veggies rich in antioxidants}, will keep you protected and can even increase the effectiveness of sunscreen. He says to look for sunscreens that contain chemical blockers like avobenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule, as well as physical blockers like zinc, oxide, and titanium dioxide. But being outside poses more risks than harmful sun rays, there's also pollution and smog to think about. According to Dr. Murad, “a moisturizing sunscreen rich in antioxidants, with ingredients like pomegranate and green tea will help protect your skin from harmful environmental elements.” We love Murad’s Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer SPF 15 (Murad.com, $33) which protects from free radicals and contains antioxidant-rich pomegranate.

Travel Beauty Month :: Best Fragrances For Trip Styles

Editor's Note: In addition to our regularly scheduled content, this month we're doing a once-weekly feature on Travel Beauty. Lauren, our beauty expert, has whipped up some incredible insights, interviews {think major LA-based skin care expert} and giveaways. See below for what we're giving away this week!

Everyone should have their own unique fragrance, something they wear that distinguishes them from everyone else and is suited to their personality. Finding this scent isn't easy, but once you do, you know right away. I discovered my own special scent many years ago in France while backpacking. One whiff of Hanae Mori's Butterfly, a blend of strawberry, blackberry, ylang-ylang, Bulgarian Rose, almond wood and many other unique notes, and I was in love. So much so, that I didn't want to tell anyone what I wore, but after a while a handful of friends purchased the same scent and Sephora started carrying it, the secret was out.

Butterfly is still a special fragrance to me, yet I do wear different scents depending on where I'm going. For example, I spritz Juicy Couture's Viva La Juicy when I go out with the girls, and Bond No.9's Saks Fifth Avenue For Her to brunch or as a daytime scent. Vacations call for different fragrances. Depending on your destination, the scent you'd wear while lying on the beach in Mykonos is different than what you'd wear while exploring the Kalahari Desert or shopping on 5th Avenue.

Here are my picks for the best fragrances for different trip styles. Let us know your favorites!

The Beach [trip style = beach]
This type of fragrance should be light and tropical. I immediately think of Comptoir Sud Pacifique's Vanille Abricot, a shockingly delicious blend of Apricot, Papaya Pulp, Jack fruit, Vanilla and Sugar Candy. The brand's Aloha Tiare would also be the perfect beach fragrance, with its exotic notes of Tiare and Frangipani flowers, ylang-ylang, Monoi, Coconut, Vanilla and Soft Musk.

Big City Trip [trip style = urban]
I know the perfect fragrance for big city travel: Velvet Rope by Apothia. It's fresh and exciting and was actually inspired by an icy cold martini! Blending Vanilla, Jasmine, Grapefruit and White Musk, this sexy scent pairs well with Christian Louboutins and the blackest eyeliner.

Rustic Countryside Travel [trip style = weekending]
When I think of the countryside, I think of flowers, especially Gardenias. Bond No.9 Saks Fifth Avenue For Her is a light, elegant blend of Jasmine, Tuberose, Gardenia, Vetiver and Vanilla, which I wore on my wedding day. This white floral fragrance instantly evokes feelings of green rolling hills and fields of wildflowers. Like all Bond fragrances, the bottle is gorgeous.

Exploring The World [trip style = active & adventure]
Adventure travel and exploring calls for a light, fresh, subtle scent. I recently tried Caudalie's Fleur de Vigne and think it's the perfect fragrance for a trip like this. With notes like Grapefruit, Grape Flowers, Pink Pepper, White Rose, Watermelon, Mandarin and Cedar, it's a warm fragrance that is never overbearing and gives you a hint of this fresh scent.

Travel Beauty :: Q&A With tarte cosmetics Founder

Travel Beauty Q&A With Tarte Cosmetics Founder[trip style = sun + sightseeing]

{Editor's note: Trip Styler's travel beauty expert, Lauren Hilton-Hochhauser, chats with beauty queen and founder of tarte cosmetics, Maureen Kelly, to find out her top picks for travel beauty.}

Maureen Kelly, founder & CEO of tarte

What are your top 5 beauty products you always take on vacation?

What are the best makeup looks for a beach vacation? What about a sightseeing vacation?

  • When I’m going on a beach vacation (which is my all-time personal favorite trip syle), I’m all for the motto “less is more” in the makeup department. Who wants to look all done up when swimming, surfing or playing volleyball?! Not me. That’s why I opt for a tinted moisturizer with SPF (our smooth operator™ is the best), waterproof mascara and a dab of SPF lip balm in a pale pink hue.
  • During my last trip to Italy, where I did a lot of sightseeing, I was sure to wear long-lasting makeup that was budgeproof and, dare I say it, sweatproof. To be certain my makeup didn’t move, I prepped my skin with tarte’s clean slate natural primer. Then I applied our Amazonian clay waterproof concealer to areas that needed it most (under my eyes after that long flight). Next, I added some bronzer and our Amazonian clay 12-hour blush on my cheekbones for added glow! I finished my look with our gifted Amazonian clay smart mascara to lengthen and condition my lashes. And finally a little tint on my lips (so it looks like I have color without trying).

What are your tips for looking and feeling good on an airplane?

  • I always carry a travel-sized bottle of Caudalie beauty elixir — I’m constantly spritzing my face to keep it moisturized and refreshed.
  • When flying I try to let my skin breathe; therefore, I wear less makeup.
  • That being said, I never fly without mascara — it’s the one thing that makes me look awake! Sometimes I switch to a waterproof version in case I fall asleep…can’t have smudging.

Tanning Is Out

[trip style = sun]

{Editor's Note: In addition to the below tanning tips, also see my interview about playing it safe in the sun with The Canadian Cancer Society! What an honour to collaborate with such a worthy cause!}

I travel to a lot of sunny places {though there are still a bazillion destinations I'd like to see}, but I'm far from a bronzed miracle and proud of it. Here's an excerpt of questions I'm often asked when I come home from the tropics: Friend: Weren't you just in Hawaii? Me: Yes. Friend: Where's your tan? Me: It's muted, I wear A LOT of sunscreen.

The Canadian Cancer Society and I have been recently chatting about sun safety, and when I heard about the Tanning Is Out campaign, I wanted to support the plea to raise awareness about the dangers of sun exposure and tanning bed use, given my passion for sun protection and obsession with hats and sunscreen.

A Speech I remember doing a speech about sun safety in grade 4. Looking back, it is always something I've been interested in, but it wasn't until I was 25---and about to leave for my honeymoon in Jamaica---I started taking it really seriously. I cringe when I think about my early Trip Styling days in university, spending my 'reading breaks' in Honolulu. I would hit the tanning bed pre-trip, spend 8 hours of the day on the beach sans sunscreen, and rationalize that my almost florescent red burn would turn into a tan... My teenage and 20-something self should have taken my grade 4 self's basic instructions...

One Fine Day One event that forced me to get serious about sun protection was the discovery of Melasma on my face---a skin disorder where sun exposure causes symmetrical dark marks on the skin. Luckily, the larger, freckle-like splotches fade with creams, but the best way to manage it is with highly limited and strategic sun exposure {see more below}---a sometimes tricky task for an outdoor-loving and sun-seeking Trip Styler.

Opportunity & Responsibility With opportunity comes responsibility. Whether it's spending time outside enjoying The West Coast's glorious summer weather, jetting off to a sun-drenched island or even skiing at the top of Blackcomb {we can't forget about sun protection in winter}, I don't take the opportunity to be under nature's heat lamp lightly. I try to enjoy it responsibly using the following precautions:

  • Face - Apply broad spectrum protection 30spf in winter/70spf in summer, or anytime I'm in a literal hotspot.
  • Body - Apply a minimum of 30spf sunscreen before and at regular intervals during sun exposure.
  • Hat - I keep one with me at all times---in my purse, the car, and in my suitcases---and don it when I run, or am out and about. I just purchased a hat with an 8" brim to wear when I'm in the desert or tropics. It is very chic, aside from the fact that it's the size of a child's umbrella!
  • Time - Yes, I spend time in the sun, and LOVE relaxing by the pool or beach, or out on the water, but I do so wearing 30 - 50spf sunscreen and often spend the peak hours {11am - 4pm} sipping umbrella drinks in the shade.

I used to be embarrassed about my white face, but now it makes me happy knowing I'm following dermatologists and beauty experts' MOST IMPORTANT anti-aging rule: wear sunscreen daily {even if it's cloudy}. And if I'm feeling really pale, there's always bronzer, self-tanner, a spray tan or creams with a light shimmer to the rescue!
