Fashion Friday :: Oh Mr. Sun

{Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather.}

Did you hear the news? After 10 seasons, CSI Miami has been cancelled. Which means no more Horatio Caine famously taking off his sunglasses and delivering crime-fighting one-liners. This post isn't about CSI or Miami, but it is about sunglasses---the accessory/travel necessity where fashion truly meets function.

The aviator will always be in style, and so will the classic wayfarer, which made a huge comeback in the past few years and remains the highest-selling style in history. But sunglasses are also about trends, such as the oversized face-covering Olsen twins-style shades that once graced the face of every girl you know. More recently, the style du jour---for men and women---has shifted to round, flat top and cat eye shapes, as well as a wider color palette beyond black and tortoise.

Trip Styler tip: Whip out your zinc! The recent popularity of neon 90s neoprene zip-up swimsuits has signaled the comeback of the sunglasses cord!

Fashion Friday :: Spring in San Francisco

Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather

It's easy to leave your heart in San Francisco, as the saying goes, but with such amazing shopping, it's even easier to leave your chequing account. Having just returned from the City by the Bay, I couldn't wait to share a few of my favorite shopping and eating haunts {since you can't have one without the other}. Don't forget your walking shoes!

San Francisco mini neighborhood shopping guide

The Mission

I have a mad crush on the Mission, which has some of the best shops and restaurants in the city---not to mention the coolest park and the prettiest boys and girls on bicycles you ever did see. It's a neighborhood gentri-hipsterfied with coffee shops, thrift stores, juice bars and high-end furniture galleries. Shop around Valencia St at hippie-artisan boutique Gravel & Gold, taxidermy garden shop Paxton Gate and must-stop lifestyle store Voyager. Do yourself a favor and eat at any of the following: Delfina, Foreign Cinema, Four Barrel Coffee, Tartine, Bar Bambino and Bi-Rite Creamery.

Hayes Valley

Hayes Valley is a bit of a locals' secret just a hop-skip from the Mission and home to boutiques and delicious eats aplenty. Shop your face off at Steven Alan, Gimme Shoes, Flight 001, Welcome Stranger, Birch and Rand+Statler, and then eat/drink your face off at Biergarten, Smitten Ice Cream and Bar Jules.

Union Square

We can't discuss shopping in San Francisco without mentioning the epicentre of west coast shopping herself: Union Square. This department store heaven, which includes Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Barneys, Saks and Neiman Marcus, is also home to all of your favourite chains like Madewell, J.Crew, Zara, Diesel, H&M and Levi's. Refuel at Blue Bottle with delicious coffee and waffles before you, ahem, window shop at the likes of Kate Spade, Chanel, John Varvatos, Prada and YSL.

Fashion Friday :: Spring In Your Step

[trip style = any]

{Fashion Friday posts are published on the last Friday of every month by fashion blogger Heather.}

Shoes always seem to be the afterthought when packing for travel {guilty!}. If packing is like a to-do list, where we tackle the easiest items first and leave the most difficult items until the end, shoes are what most people put off packing until their suitcase is already full. They're bulky and they have to work with everything we pack. Oh yeah, and they have to be comfortable and cute {sorry gentlemen...handsome?}.

Packing shoes for winter travel is tricky when you have to consider boots, but when you're packing for spring or trips to sunny destinations, you've got a little more suitcase space to work with, literally. See above for a few of this season's most trip-worthy shoes.

Trip Styler Tips 1/ If your shoes don't fit in your carry-on luggage, pack them in your personal item/purse. Always aim for the top of the size allowance on the personal item! Not only can you pack your shoes and magazines in there---you can also save room for trip purchases. 2/ If you're beaching/pooling, bring two pairs of flip flops---one for water, one for town. If you're aiming for height, ladies, you should consider easier-to-walk-in wedges. And if you're bringing flats, consider a shoe clip to change up the look.

Now What To Wear? Women (clockwise from top left) Madewell patent sidewalk skimmer, Gap striped espadrilles, Rainbow braided leather flip flop, Red Valentino flip flop, Madewell holepunch flat sandal, Osborn tropica wisp oxfords, Cole Haan air sadie driving moc, Matt Bernson jack sandal, Loeffler Randall inge clog, Gap floral wedge sandals

Men (bottom row) Vans california chukka decon, Rainbow premier leather flip flops, Nike vintage collection waffle racer

Scarves: they're on every woman's travel packing list. Well, guess what? They're not overrated---and they're not just for women, but more on that later. What other travel accessory is fashionable, practical and comfortable? Chilly flight? Put on a scarf. Broken bag strap? Tie on a scarf. Coffee on your shirt? Cover with a scarf. Fell and broke your arm? Sling on a scarf. Forgot to pack a scarf? Go buy a scarf!

Watch this clever video for 25 try-at-home-in-the-mirror-by-yourself-with-a-glass-of-wine ideas. Talk about the perfect Friday night...

Trip Styler Tip #1: Have you ever noticed how some women just sling scarves around their necks and look perfectly put together? They could just be French, but chances are their scarves aren't cheap. The sad truth is that pricier scarves hang and hold their shape better than more affordable scarves. Try the same tie with an H&M scarf and an Alexander McQueen scarf and you'll see what I mean. You can find a fantastic scarf for $5, but if you want to feel like a million bucks, invest in a fabulous scarf.

Trip Styler Tip #2: Guys, you can wear non-winter scarves too. Brooklyn-based company the Hill-side makes great scarves from utilitarian fabrics like selvedge chambray, wool and organic flax cotton.

Fashion Friday :: Celeb Travel Must-Haves

[trip style = any]

Lady Gaga recently tweeted that she loves flying because she can sleep, drink red wine and not be bothered by phone calls. But my question is: how can she sleep in these airport outfits? And if she changes on the flight, how does she even fit in the plane bathroom? But then, those are the big questions in life and I won't attempt to tackle them today.

One of my favourite online and grocery store check-out distractions is looking at celebrity airport style. Celebs usually manage to look pretty fantastic {Britney Spears and Megan Fox withstanding}, thanks, in part, to the celebrity travel uniform: sunglasses {likely Ray-Bans or Tom Fords}, jeans, lightweight jacket and one or all of the trends shown below. Follow these simple style suggestions and you'll be flying like a star. Or at least closer to the stars... Because you'll be at 30,000 ft.

Trip Styler Tip: I've had some pretty high level celeb sightings at LAX -- Freddie Prinze Jr and Jake from The Bachelor {jealous? wink wink} -- so remember to keep your eyes peeled in the terminal.
